小说一夜成名似乎在海明威意料之外。“一下子就拥有了500万的读者（或者不管究竟有多少），真让人害怕，”他在写给斯克里布纳的编辑华莱士·迈耶的信中说，“一下子看到了这么多评论自己的屁话，不论褒贬，都不好受。” [67]
这本书赢得了次年的普利策奖。到了1954年，海明威的文坛地位已经无可撼动；当年，他被授予诺贝尔文学奖，以表彰他“新近在《老人与海》中展现的对叙述之道的精通，以及他对同时代文学风格的影响” [68] 。
海明威没有出席颁奖典礼，不过他寄去了一段很有个人特色的简短演讲词，托人代读。“一位真正的作家，”他写道，“应该不断尝试做别人从未做过的事，或者别人一次又一次失败的事。有时候，天遂人愿，他会成功。” [69]
7年后，和抑郁做着斗争的海明威终于拿起了猎枪，在爱达荷州凯彻姆（ketchu）的家中自杀。最初的报道并没说他死于自杀。海明威的第四任妻子玛丽——此时已经是他的遗孀——向媒体说了这样一番话：“今天早上7点30分，海明威先生在清理枪支的时候不慎走火身亡。葬礼没有确定时间，并且不对外开放。” [70] 回忆当时，她说自己并没有“刻意说谎，直到一个月之后，我才能够面对现实” [71] 。
在生命最后的时光中，年轻时的巴黎岁月再次涌上了海明威心头。他此时写下的是他所谓的“巴黎速写”——20年代他生活中发生的故事，以及他认识的人们。1964年海明威已经不在人世，这些文章集结成《流动的盛宴》出版，这个书名是a e 霍奇纳向玛丽·海明威提议的。1950年霍奇纳和海明威同坐在丁香园咖啡馆的吧台，海明威对他说：“如果你足够幸运，年轻时曾经在巴黎居住，那么你此后的一生中不论走到哪里，它都会跟随其后，因为巴黎是一场不散的宴席（a oveable feast）。” [72]
瓦莱丽·海明威说，海明威在写巴黎往事的时候很开心。1959年秋天瓦莱丽是海明威的助手，陪伴他游览巴黎，核验往事。他们重访了一些故地，海明威在手稿中又让它们重现新生。他又去了丁香园，去了多摩和精英咖啡馆小酌一杯，故事里的杰克·巴恩斯和波莱特·阿施利夫人曾在这里开怀痛饮。他们重访了他和哈德莉的旧居，瓦莱丽说他们并没有进去，因为海明威想在心中保存这些地方尘封在时间里的样子。站在乐牧安主教路的老楼前，他回忆起楼下早已不知去向的舞厅，还有在那间狭小的，没有下水管道的公寓里蜗居的青年时代。
“说到没有浴室，诸多不便的日子，他只是轻轻耸了耸肩，”瓦莱丽回忆，“这是他们最快乐的地方。他对它依然满心柔情。这座房子是所有一切的开始。” [73]
霍奇纳和海明威聊过巴黎的那些年，也谈及过那些住在《太阳照常升起》世界中的人。海明威深情地说到菲茨杰拉德，虽然他在《流动的盛宴》里把菲茨杰拉德描绘成了一个乏味的庸人，一块长醉不醒的废柴。谈话中，格特鲁德·斯泰因获得的评价岂止是刻薄：海明威坚称，她的《爱丽丝 b·托克拉斯自传》“谎话连篇”；还有，她把自己当作所有蜂拥来到这个城市的青年作家的老祖母，这未免也太高看自己了。至于哈罗德·勒布和杜芙·特怀斯登的恋情，海明威说，“可怜的勒布，下半生都给毁了” [74] 。
《太阳照常升起》带给勒布、特怀斯登和其他人莫大的苦恼，对此海明威即使曾经后悔过，也从未表露出来。
“我曾问他：那么，如果你必须重写一遍，会不会下手不那么重？”霍奇纳回忆说。
